Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving day here in the U.S is always the fourth Thursday of the month of November. It is an expression of thanks for material and spiritual possessions and bountiful harvest with thanksgiving ceremonies.Traditionally, people celebrate Thanksgiving day by gathering at home with family and friends with roast turkey. How did Thanksgiving day started? It started in1621, the New World the Pilgrim’s fall harvest was very flourishing and bountiful after a hard time. So, they harvested corn, fruits, vegetables and prepared fish in salt, and meat that was smoked good enough to put away for the winter. Moreover, in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln selected a national day of thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday of each November and proclaimed it as the holiday.
Gung Hay Fat Choy!
Gung Hay Fat Choy! It means “Best wishes and Congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year” in Chinese. Time runs really fast. I could hardly imagine it is almost January. In Asia right now, it is already 31st. I missed the New Year’s Eve celebration in Cebu – people are busy preparing for “Media Noche” foods. Media Noche is a special dinner a night before New Year in the Philippines or simply means “midnight meal”. This is to celebrate the coming New Year. Oh boy, I missed those days. The Media Noche foods are ham, some native dessert, fruits and more. The Media Noche is not complete without round fruits for good fortune. And when midnight strikes, you’d hear firecrackers and see pretty fireworks. It is one of the ways to end the year and welcome the New Year.
Tofurky for Thanksgiving
Do you already have a Turkey for Thanksgiving? Turkey takes days to thaw out. We don’t worry about that because we are going to have a Tofurky feast tomorrow. It is a meat substitute and made of gluten and organic tofu. For me, it tastes better than Turkey. The price is comparable to big frozen turkey. I am kinda excited about it. Most vegetarians and vegans cook Tofurky on Thanksgiving - it became a Thanksgiving food. I really do think, Tofurky is such a great idea so Thanksgiving wouldn’t be so boring for us vegetarians and vegans. The Tofurky feast includes a “wishbone” jerky, cranberry-apple potato dumplings and a mushroom gravy. This brings a complete meal on Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Turkey for Thanksgiving Day
Have you ever wondered why Turkey is the Thanksgiving food? As if the celebration is not complete without any turkey. Turkey was once a symbol of America when former President Benjamin Franklin picked Turkey as a national symbol of America – because it was a good runner and had a sharp sight.
Another thing was in the year 1621, which popularly came to be known as ‘First Thanksgiving Feast in England. Queen Elizabeth of 16th century England had a roast goose during a harvest festival. During the meal, she received news that the Spanish Armada had sunk while sailing on the way to England for attack. Upon hearing the news, Queen Elizabeth ordered for another goose to celebrate. Goose became a favorite food at harvest time in England. So, when the pilgrims arrived in America, they swapped the roasted goose with roasted turkey as main course because it was abundant. Now, it is customary that every house cooks turkey as the main dish on Thanksgiving Day.
Obama is the 44th U.S. President
Obama is the 44th U.S. President and the first African-American President in the U.S. history. The election went very fast yesterday. At around 10pm EST yesterday, people proc
laimed Obama as President. Well, I already saw that he’s gonna win in the election and be the next President. He is very popular. However, I was impressed by McCain’s concession. He really handled himself well despite his loss in election. It was a heartfelt speech he made. I like how he said, “It is natural. It’s natural, tonight, to feel some disappointment. But tomorrow, we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again.” That was very impressive.
