Why do we get hiccups? I get hiccups every now and then and I hate it. What causes it? Hiccups happen when the diaphragm involuntarily contracts. When you eat too much quickly and swallow too much air, you get hiccups. It is also caused by muscle spasms in your chest and throat. Hiccups affect males often than females. Hiccups usually last within few minutes to few hours. Some hiccups last longer than 48 hours or a month. These hiccups might be caused by lack of sleep, fatigue, weakness and weight loss. How to stop hiccups? You may swallow a teaspoon of sugar or hold your breath. I remember my mother used to shock or startle me to get rid of hiccups. It actually works!
