It’s September!
Wow! Time runs fast. We are in “ber” season. Actually, let’s talk about “how months were named”. I have been wondering about it. Aren’t you too? Well, here is the thing–The four of the months are based on numbers in Latin. Let’s start with the first month—January. This month was named for the old Roman god—Janus, the god of beginnings and endings. February is named after a festival of purification called Februa, in honor of a god. Long time ago, in Roman cities, February was the month for the cleansing of temples and houses. March is derived from Mars, the war god. April came from “aperit,” a Latin word that means “open.” April is the month in which plants begin to grow in this month. May is named after is from Maia, a goddess. June is derived from June was named for Juno, the proud wife of the great god Jupiter. July was the month in which Julius Caesar was born, and named Julius in his honor in 44 BCE, the year of his assassination. The month August was originally called tilis (from tus, “six”), but the name was later changed in honor of the first of the Roman emperors, Augustus. September The name comes from septem, “seven”. October came from octo, “eight”. November is came from novem, “nine”. December is named comes from the word decem, “ten”.
Sounds interesting huh? It is nice to know the legend of months–how they are named. It is 121 days until year 2009!
